Key Stage 2 (Year Groups 5 & 6)
Homework in Key Stage 2 is an important extension of your child’s education. All pupils will be set regular homework and this will support them in forming good study habits and independent study skills as well as underpinning the work learnt and completed in class.
In Years 5 and 6, pupils will be set approximately 30 minutes of Maths and English homework each week, in addition to the 20 minutes of reading expected daily from each pupil. In English, this homework will consist of a written spelling, punctuation and grammar piece of work and/or a reading comprehension task. In addition to the written work, there will be an electronic piece of work to complete on Spelling Shed or Century Tech. In Maths, pupils will be set a written task as well as an electronic one on a programme such as TTRockstars, MyMaths or Sumdog. In addition to this, it is expected pupils will spend time learning their multiplication tables.
Written homework will not be set in English and Maths in Year 5 until the pupils are put into their final groups; however, during this time pupils are still expected to complete 20 minutes of reading each day and spend time ensuring they know their multiplication tables. Homework is not set during assessment weeks or in the week prior to a holiday for either year group. The only exception to this is during the Easter holiday prior to SATS in Year 6, where pupils will be set light-touch revision tasks.
Pupils are not generally set homework for other subjects, but they may occasionally be asked to complete a small task or project.
All homework will be recorded in the homework planner and will be thoroughly explained to pupils before it is bought home. Pupils will always be given enough time to complete tasks so that they are able to seek help and support from staff if they require it. We very much welcome your support with homework and would greatly appreciate it if you could encourage your child to complete their tasks in good time. If pupils do not complete tasks on time, then a ‘H’ code will be recorded in their planner. All logins and passwords for the various websites your child will use during Key Stage 2, are recorded on the passwords page of their homework planner.
